My husband is a great athlete and he also enjoys bowling. We occasionally have a night out at the bowling alley and we always have silly banter back and forth in regards to bowling and whether or not it is a true sport. I know that it is considered a sport and any bowler will argue to their grave. I view it as more of a hobby or pass time.... something fun to do. What other sport out there can you be overweight, out of shape, and smoke and drink heavily while doing it, and all without a referee or umpire? What are your thoughts?

I know some people are very competitive when it comes to bowling, esp. my cousin who goes 3x/week. I figure its a sport just as any but this one just appeals to some people and not nearly as much as others do.

Its a sport in just the same way as darts is a sport-and that also produces a similar shapre of sportsman to bowling. There's a certain amount of physical activity as well as skill involved.

I'd have to go with it as a sport, as well, just not as intensive as some of the other sports. You still need to have a certain amount of physical ability in order to bowl well and not just be fooling around like most of us do when we go to the alley.

I would agree that it is a sport.  It certainly fits the criteria of being competitive and requires elements of skill and some amount of physical exertion.

In fact it is recommended as a form of exercise for people who are either so overweight that they can't do other things, or who are physically limited in some way. So that adds weight to it being a sport I think.

I am sure that one of these days, I am going to hear that kite flying is a sport.  However I think that bowling qualifies as being a sport easy enough - at least easier than some others that I can think of.
