I like the idea of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in individual sports because it recognizes the top three best efforts put forth. I think this gives encouragement for the 2nd and 3rd place winners to do better next time.

RE: Second place

I think it depends on the sport. Track and field I think is one where the top 3 should be honored since they often have to beat out such a large field. Some of the team sports I think first place is enough to recognize. It all depends on the game being played in my opinion.

RE: Second place

I agree that the top 2 or 3 should be honored in a lot of sports, especially in cases where the game is won by a nose hair, and quite often they are.

RE: Second place

Great question - I guess I never thought about it before. Actually, I could probably do with just 1st and 2nd place and get rid of the 3rd place. But as so many other things in society 1st, 2nd, 3rd is so entrenched it will probably never change.

RE: Second place

I think top three are sufficient. I don't think I'd like just hearing about first place and more than third is rather pointless. Although, when I have a favorite athlete, I like to know where he/she ended up so there has to be a complete listing available somewhere.

RE: Second place

That is a good point about those being disqualified but what happens if say 1 is disqualified and 2 really wasnt fully up to the stats that the fans want? Thats why Im staying with top three, that I know I can handle. 1 chance for disqualified, 1 for "close but no cigar" and then one winner.

RE: Second place

Let's keep this in perspective. If we are talking a school sports day then second or third may not mean a lot. But this is the Olympics-that means that these guys are the second or third best in the entire world! That's no small feat-and heck yes! It deserves recognition!

RE: Second place

I think that although achieving first place is the ultimate glory of many a sports person, I always like to know who came second and third, and they should always be listed. I don't care about fourth place or after, though.

RE: Second place

Yes, didn't think of the Olympics giving the gold, silver, and bronze. :D And about the disqualifying, if that happens, then it is all over the news anyway, and the second place winner is reigned as the real champion.

RE: Second place

I do think that at least the top 2 are important. Especially when you consider that sometimes number one ends up disqualified for one reason or another, often drug usage. In a competition with 4 or 5 people, 2nd place doesn't say much, but if there are many people then 2nd place says a great deal!

RE: Second place

I am not one that really minds a top three for games, but anything more than that is just a little too much for my tastes I guess. I am used to seeing the tops from when I was young and watched the Olympics but I'm just not sure most people see it that way anymore.

Second place

I've seen this discussed elsewhere... do you think second and third place should be honored, or do you think they are just the first loser?

Personally, I like to see a list of all the competitors and their rankings, but I do really think first place should be the headliner.
