I really do hope they decide to bring it back in 8 years. I think it is definitely more interesting to watch and more of a "sport" than the air rifle!

I also hope they redo the format. Going into the final the U.S. Team had not lost a game and Japan had lost one (to the U.S.). I think there should have been another game played. I just don't think it was fair that the U.S. couldn't continue to play after the one loss.

The "air rifle" is really an Olympic sport?  I guess it's better than letting them bring real guns.  I  would love to see women's softball continue and think it is a very interesting game.

Why are they getting rid of softball anyway? I heard lots of lamenting that it could be done away with and what not but never the explanation of why. Are they replacing it with another sport or just doing away with it?

And I believe race walking takes the cake for the lamest sport.

Well, I did a little bit of research and found out that the 117th IOC (International Olypmic Committee) voted (in July 2005) to exclude softball (along with baseball) from the World Olympic Program in 2012, but will remain on the list of Olympic sports as noted in the Olympic Charter, rule 46, and may be eligible for inclusion in the program for the 2016 World Olympic Games. So, there's still hope and with enough world wide support, it may be reinstated in 2016.

I hear there is a ton of talk on this for both male and female baseball/softball. I know not many places will do it, but it does kind of make sense to ditch it if there are say only 3 countries competing right?

Is it lack of competition that's making them suspend baseball and softball? If that is the case, I have to admit that it isn't much of a competition when only a few countries send teams.

I don't know. Baseball is a fundamentally American sport and yet many countries now give the US a run for their money at the Olympics. So if they are not deciding to send teams or make teams its not just because they don't like American sports. I think a bit of change is good and obviously this one could use some change.

There were 8 countries who competed in olympic softball this summer. You can help keep it an olympic sport by visiting www.savesoftball.com and sign the online petition. How about getting rid of table tennis? Come on!
